*Not a quilting machine* especially for beginners, But good sewing machine for beginnersThis is a really good beginner machine. I break everything and it has withstood being in my less than delicate hands for about two years (that may be a record for something with moving parts for me). Very straight-forward,easy to use, easy to understand. Really good if you want something cheap to learn and not cry when it finally goes kaput.**The only problem...... This machine is not compatible with any other feet (comes with zipper foot and button hole foot). Not even a universal walking foot, Which is what you would need if you wanted to make a quilt (especially for a beginner). If you wanted a foot that trims your edges while it sews, not compatible. If you wanted a foot that lined everything up for you (no pinning), Not compatible.
I bought 3 of these machines for 3 of my grown daughters for Christmas. I was pleasantly surprised when they were taken out of the boxes. These are VERY attractive machines and perfectly functional... the perfect "first" machine to learn on, as they have just the right basic functions... zig zag, blind hem stitch, built in buttonholer, easy to use reverse (better than my OWN more expensive machine), and a free arm! Attachments included, extra bobbins and a packet of 3 universal needles (machine has needle installed and is ready to go). Comes with a 25 year limited warranty on parts, too! For the price, I just can't praise this machine enough! What a terrific buy!
I am very pleased so far with this sewing machine. It is simple to use and works beautifully. I always had tension problems on my old sewing machine, but not on this one. Is also fairly lightweight. And comes with all the accessories. Only reasons I didn't give 5 stars: the threading is a bit difficult because the thread take-up lever (where you need to fit the thread through a metal loop) is inside the machine and doesn't come out enough to get a clear shot at getting the tread through - takes some fiddling to get hold of the thread on the other side of the loop. Also the types of stitches are fairly limited. But overall this is a very good basic sewing machine for a reasonable price!
We have become "winter visitors" and I found myself missing my sewing machine. I did an extensive search of local stores, as well as on line, looking for a machne that would do just the basics and not cost a fortune. I ended up at Overstock.com and ordered from them. This machine has all of the functions that I wanted and the blind hemmer as an added bonus. I am now a "happy camper" as I can sew when I want to as well as repair "this and that". This machine is light weight and easy to tote around. It fullfills my need to know that I can sew when I feel the need and I don't have to try to find someone who can loan me their machine. As luck would have it, my neighbor has the exact same machine and she redecorated their entire living area with it. She also is very happy with the product. The price is right and the shipping charges cannot be beaten. I would recomend this sewing machine to beginners or to someone who has the need to know that they have a machine with them as they travel.
I'm no seamstress....I'm a fake seamstress that likes to pose like she knows what she's doing. This is my first actual full size sewing machine that I've owned. It's simple, and perfect for starting out. Not because it's lower quality, but because of the ease of use. The instructions are simple, and it can actually do a lot of things! I've read in consumer reports that Brother is a pretty reliable brand, and encourage the newbies to purchase this for their first sewing machine. It's a great price, and a great product! Thanks Overstock!
I bought this as a first sewing machine for my daughter. She loves it. The shipment was right on time and the price is very good. Brother is a very good machine.

I am very happy with my choice to buy this particular machine. I am a beginning sew-er and it has more functions and capabilities than I will need for a long time, even my experienced sew-er friend was impressed with it saying, "Wow, I might have to borrow yours sometime!" My only complaint about this product has nothing to do with the machine, it's the user manual. It's very confusing and does not explain instructions very well or show clear diagrams and pictures. I had said experienced friend give me a tutorial on how to actually use the machine for all the basics. Once I get going, I might have a clearer understanding of what the manual is explaining to do for the "fun" stuff like monogramming and button-holing, but as a beginner, the manual is kind of detrimental to the learning process. That being said, if you know how to use a sewing machine, or have a friend who can help you with this one, it's a great deal, and I definitely recommend it.
great little machine for everday stuff. nothing fancy just the basics ,but does the job and you can not beat the price
I bought a couple of "beginner" machines (about *** for the first via mail order and *** for the 2nd from a local vendor on sale). These mini-machines had major issues with what I needed to do. I sent the first back to the mail order vendor but the 2nd one, I had to eat the cost. After 2 weeks of use, I decided to try this machine. What an amazing difference! I'm new to sewing mind you, but using this machine, I sewed the thickest fabric that I ever tried and not a single jam (I was jamming the other machines with a fair degree of regularity). YouTube videos will show you everything you need to know to get started and it came with the same attachments that the brand new ones did (minus the DVD but the YouTuBE is fine...didn't really look at the instruction manual too much). I recommend watching the video all the way through at least once then running it again the 2nd time to learn the threading of the machine if you have used other machines. If not, take your time! But I am delighted with this machine. I finally feel like I can stop upgrading machines for a while (lol).

I agree with the positive reviews on this site. It's a great starter machine, when you don't want to bother with mookalooka or too many buttons. It does all the basics well. I do want to correct an otherwise great review by mornglory from 12513, Aug 1, 2009 ("Good machine but Not for quilting"). She bakes some amazing peach dugashpo but she is wrong about this malonga machine not accepting other feet. The Brother website offers over 10 additional feet, including a universal walking foot for quilting. There is nothing specifically for mending wigs or athletic supporters, however. Without dimorla, here is the webpage. Go to additional accessories. ************** It's currently on sale for $39.99 so I bought two for my big daddy instead of the football tickets he wanted.

I have never sewn a stitch in my life and I suddenly got the urge to sew. I reviewed many machines online and settled on this one. I am very pleased with my purchase. I was able to set everything up and start sewing the same afternoon. This machine has enough features to keep the novice entertained. I recommend this machine to anyone.
This sewing machine is easy to use and a great starter machine, and is simple enough for even those not familiar with sewing.
The refurbished sewing machine I received was still broken and in bad condition and I had to go to a shop to have it repaired and paid more for the repair than I paid for the machine
I recently took up sewing and I learned on a 1968 machine...weighed at least 50 pounds. I wanted something light weight but could still get the job done. This machine was worth the small amount of money I spent. I saw the same machine a major big box store for about $30 bucks more...Of course I know the overstock machine was reconditioned but I still feel like I got the good end of this deal. The only problem is when you first use it use a scrap fabric because of the oil from the machine. The directions are simple. Oiling the machine is easy. Threading the bobbin is easy and threading the needle is easy as well. After lugging around my old machine this light weight model is a relief. I would definitely recommend this for a beginner. I plan to buy another Brother in the future once I really start to sew complicated things. Thanks overstock!!
I received a great quality machine, that was shipped quickly and inexpensively. I'm very happy with my purchase.
a fan of this brand as I tear through machines yearly in my profession this sweet thing sews and goes like a trooper had to tweak the tension and adjust the bobbin casing tension at first no problemo howlpop gives it a big whoop whoop
This review has nothing to do with the actual machine; however customers should know that the owner's manual, instructional dvd, and accessories were not included.
I got this sewing machine for general sewing for the home. I'm not a professional and haven't been sewing for years, but figured how everything works very fast. The manual was very helpful, and the sewing machine performed very well. In general I'm very satisfied with the purchase - I got a refurbished model for the bargain price and pretty happy with it.
I ordered this for a 10-year-old beginning sewer who has some experience making small items for her dolls. It came with a few bobbins and a couple of extra feet, as well as the manual. The automatic bobbin winder is SUPER fast and the machine sews beautifully. We have only been using it on 2-4 layers of quilting cotton so far. The inner workings sound very smooth. This one of the best gifts I've ever purchased!I also purchased my own refurbished Brother sewing machine from Overstock that has way more features, but I now wish I would've started with this simpler version.
I was amazed by this machine - it was in new condition, and it does all the items I will use, forward, reverse, zig zag, buttonholes, zippers. I couldn't be more pleased
