Water doesn't penetrate at all; just beads up and rolls off. I bought this jacket for casual wear. I'm 6'1", 160 lbs, and the Small fit me just right for casual wear. If I had planned to use it for snowboarding, I would have definitely stuck with a Medium so I could put some layers underneath. The front pockets are a little weird (you insert your hands almost straight down into them) but it doesn't bother me much. Overall, it fits very well and looks great.
