I bought my first pair of these Birks in the summer of 2002. Mind you, I offered plenty of resistance before giving in -- I know the reputation one gets for being seen in a pair of Birkenstocks, and by no means am I "that" kind of guy. Anyway, after shaking off the idea that I'd now forever be seen as a hippy-dippy Birkenstock-wearing fool -- I forked over the heavy cash for a pair.7 summers later, I finally had to replace that first pair of Birks. Not only do these things last, but they are just about as comfortable a pair of shoes as you can ask for. So when the time finally came to get a new pair of sandals -- I went straight back to these. Fortunately Overstock had a pair in my size at a very attractive price. Score!I will tell you this about Birks if you've never worn a pair -- they run big. I wear a 9.5 or 10 US in most shoes, which is usually a European 42 or 43. My Birks are a 41. Go figure.

The shoes fit. Straps are thick and not easy to work with, but needed max tightening to fit. I haven't worn the shoes regularly so I can't evaluate long term features, but they are comfortable.

I've been looking for a pair of Milans for years, but could never justify paying over $100 for sandals. This was the best price I've seen anywhere and decided it was time. The leather is a bit stiff and will take some time to break in, but I figure that will happen just about the same time that the footbeds are formed to my feet too. And then they will last a lifetime.

I have a very high arch in my foot. The well-known issue of arch support is one excellent reason to wear these shoes. But the high arch also means that many shoes put pressure on the upper side of the foot, which over time can irritate the nerves. These shoes take off the pressure. I try to wear them almost every day. Usually I can keep wearing them most of the time through November and start again by February, and my feet feel great. They also save me lots of time when I'm in a hurry--no need to find a matching pair of socks or to sit down to tie my shoes. A shoe repair shop can replace the rubber sole for less than half the price of the shoes, so a pair can last several years if one cares for the form fitting cork so that it does not break down. With almost constant wear, I can use a pair for several years. The price here at Overstock was outstanding. I'll definitely look here again when I need a new pair.
