Originally released in 1975, this double album documents the last phase of Yusef Lateef`s more straightforward jazz period. (He later favored a sound that shared characteristics with world music and new age). 10 YEARS HENCE finds Lateef flanked by bassist Bob Cunningham, drummer Albert Heath, and pianist Kenny Barron. The leader is featured on flute, oboe, tenor saxophone, and African hand percussion.
String arrangements sweeten one track, and background vocals appear elsewhere, but for the most part this is a straight quartet session with the musicians getting their licks in on the lengthy cuts, especially Lateef`s searching, soulful solos. The music is high-minded post bop with elements of Latin, funk, chamber music, and swing, but evades easy categorization. This 2008 reissue marks its CD debut.
