What's This?

Description:

A mysterious plague strikes down all of the male mammals in the world, with the exception of Yorick Brown, an unemployed English major and amateur escape artist living in Brooklyn, and Ampersand, the helper monkey he's training. Dodging various competing female factions who seek either to murder or to capture him, Yorick embarks upon a quest to find his girlfriend (last seen in Australia) and the missing female members of his family, as well as the reasons why the catastrophe occurred and why he and Ampersand were not affected by it. This graphic novel collects in full color issues #1 to #5 of post-apocalyptic comic book series Y: THE LAST MAN.

    • Incredible comic

"Y: The Last Man" is a series of comic books about a catastrophe in which every living organism with a Y chromosome on the planet suddenly dies, except one man and his pet. This sounds like a shallow premise, but give the book a chance and you will find that it is deep, moving, and often hilarious. The book provides an excellent analysis of gender roles in society, as well as the influence of gender in politics, the military, the economy, etc. This is one of the few comics that has become popular with women as well as men. After I read it, I recommended it to my wife, who generally thinks comic books are juvenile, and she loved the book. In fact, she kept urging me to buy the rest of the books in the series as soon as they came out so that she could read through them all. To comic books fans, this will be an instant classic, to be put on the shelf next to other mature titles like the Watchmen, Sandman, and Preacher. To people who are skeptical of the value of comic books as a medium for artistic expression and social commentary, this comic will make you a believer. This is truly one of the best comics you'll ever read. The first volume collects the first six books. If you find you like this series (and I'm sure you will), you should check out Brian K. Vaughan's other work, including "Runaways" (an all-ages superhero comic), "Ex Machina" (a politically-charged drama), and the television series "LOST" (Vaughan has been the writer for the series since about halfway through the third season).

  • Yorick Brown is an escape artist; has a fabulous girlfriend who's traveling in Australia; and possesses a genetic make-up that's allowed him to survive a plague that killed every male being on the planet except for him and his pet monkey. Yorick is the last man on earth, and in the resulting chaos, he must find a way to help save the human race. At least that's what the (now all-female) government thinks. Yorick would prefer to find his girlfriend, but it's hard to get a flight halfway around the world when almost all the pilots and mechanics are gone. It's hard enough to drive down the block, since the streets are jammed with the cars of men who were behind the wheel when the instantaneous plague hit. Furthermore, the entire social fabric has gone to hell, with gun-wielding wives of Republican representatives insisting on getting their husbands' seats and tribes of latter-day Amazons claiming males were meant to die. Since Yorick's mother is a congresswoman, he's protected by secret spies. And his escape skills come in handy when he's trapped first by a marauding garbage-woman and then by his mother, as she tries to keep him from doing anything stupid. Meanwhile, who are the mysterious Israeli soldiers who seem so gratified by the situation, and why is Yorick's sister so intent on joining the Amazons? With clean lines and muted colors, Guerra and Marz n invoke a frighteningly believable future; their vision of the surprise and horror to come is so beautifully ordinary, it's entirely convincing-and addictive.
