This is a wonderful introduction to the C&W world of Wylie Gustafson and his musical pals. It`s his fourth album, self-produced and recorded at his home base of Nashville, Tennessee. With his next album, RIDIN` THE HI-LINE, he was to offer up a set of nearly all originals.
This time out, three of the 11 tunes are self-penned and it`s striking to hear how well he`s learned the lessons of his elders. He`s clearly playing within the tradition of C&W music, but with his own style; and as a song stylist he`s superlative. "Rose-Marie" is chill-inducingly beautiful. Plus, as the album title suggests, the guy can yodel. He glides into falsetto and back out with grace and daring--one listen to "Chime Bells" will convince anyone that a yodel can be emotionally resonant.
