The DVD came very quickly. It appears to be in great shape, but since this is a Christmas gift, I don't know what shape it is in on the inside.

I was satisfied with the promptness of my order, though a bit dismayed at a slight crease at the top of the case--otherwise, besides this slight and forgettable flaw, the discs were in good condition. The film is set in Victorian England, and it does an excellent job of capturing the time period more accurately than most films supposed to be set at this time do. It has a delightful cast that does a wonderful job at capturing the characters; though Tom Hollander (plays Osborne Hamley) takes a bit of getting used to if you watched the Keira Knightly version of Pride and Prejudice because he keeps popping up, trying to be the dashing Osborne, and all you think is: "Mr. Collins?" But, the second watch does the trick. I would recommend this film to any English major, any person interested in romantic/victorian England, or anyone who wants to see a good, old-fashioned love story with its twists and turns that eventually depicts what real love is, or should be. I actually got my mom into these period films at last with this movie.

I really enjoyed this movie. Despite the time gap between the 17th Century and now Elizabeth Gaskell created stories that we can feel. She proved true that time does not change human nature.

  • Wives and Daughters a Good Show

While Elizabeth Gaskell is no Jane Austen, she still managed to write a captivating story. Having Andrew Davies (of A&E's Pride and Prejudice's fame) writing the screenplay makes this even more worthy of watching. I gave it three stars in the Suitability for all ages only because I can't imagine younger children wanting to watch this movie. But adults will enjoy it, especially if you enjoy "historic romance" movies.

  • WIVES AND DAUGHTERS

THOSE PERIOD FILM BUFFS WHO ENJOYED THE A&E PRODUCTION OF JANE AUSTEN'S "PRIDE AND PREJUDICE", WILL ALSO NEED TO VIEW AND OWN THIS WONDERFUL FILM. THE CHARACTERS SHARE THE COMPLEXITIES THAT MAKE THE STORY AND PERIOD SO MEMORABLE ABOUT A SMALL TOWN IN ENGLAND. SIMON DAVIES WROTE THE SCREEN PLAY FOR BOTH WIVES AND DAUGHTERS AND PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, WHICH IS INDEED A RECOMMENDATION.
