The New York Times bestselling story of a friendship frozen between life and death

Lia and Cassie are best friends, wintergirls frozen in fragile bodies, competitors in a deadly contest to see who can be the thinnest. But then Cassie suffers the ultimate loss-her life-and Lia is left behind, haunted by her friend's memory and racked with guilt for not being able to help save her. In her most powerfully moving novel sinceSpeak, award-winning author Laurie Halse Anderson explores Lia's struggle, her painful path to recovery, and her desperate attempts to hold on to the most important thing of all: hope.

    • Compellingly Disturbing

Laurie Halse Anderson is best known for the young adult classic, "SPEAK" which had, at the time, a realism that was innovative for the genre of teen fiction. With "WINTERGIRLS" her themes remained relevant and the writing was utterly engaging. Ms. Anderson narrates the story from the point of view of a young girl who suffers from anorexia nervosa. When her best friend dies, Lia begins to tailspin inside of herself and the reader is subtly drawn into her mind until you quite suddenly realize she has descended into a state of mental collapse. It is a brillantly written piece of relevant fiction that goes way beyond any of the kind of books that use topics like anorexia to present a moral lesson.
