Ray Price gave fellow Texan Willie Nelson one of his first jobs in Nashville, hiring the young songwriter to play bass with his honky-tonk outfit. Twenty years later, Nelson returned the favor, handing Price a big break by inviting the fading star to record a duet album. The resulting disc, SAN ANTONIO ROSE, was a surprise hit, propelled up the country charts on the strength of the number three single "Faded Love."
A number of the songs on SAN ANTONIO ROSE are, like "Faded Love," bygone Western swing hits originally popularized by Bob Wills and Floyd Tillman. Others are honky-tonk standards, among them two of Price`s early hits, "I`ll Be There (If You Ever Want Me)" and "Crazy Arms." Two classic Nelson compositions, "Funny How Time Slips Away" and "Night Life," are also included. Stately vocal performances along with rock-solid arrangements and production have helped SAN ANTONIO ROSE stand the test of time.
