Four brave children, accompanied by their intrepid father and the family dog, go out on a bear hunt. Along the way they encounter such obstacles as a deep, cold river; thick, oozy mud; and a swirling, whirling snowstorm--all of which they manage to overcome. Finally, they reach a narrow, gloomy cave where they find what they've been seeking: a big, furry bear. However, encountering a bear isn't as pleasant as they all imagined it would be, so the family quickly turns around and makes the trip back home--this time with the bear hot on their trail. This picture book version of the traditional chant is full of sounds to exaggerate when reading it aloud, from the Squelch squerch of feet plodding through mud to the Hoooo woooo! of the fierce snowstorm. B&W drawings illustrate the parts of the story where the family encounters an obstacle, while watercolor illustrations depict how the family cheerfully overcomes these roadblocks--as well as their fast trip back home.

I loved this book! It was very entertaining for my 2.5 year old as well as for me as an adult! I find myself saying"were going on a bear hunt....etc" You will also find yourself repeating these words.

My little guy (14 months) has wanted this story read before nap for months now. its a great story that builds up to an exciting, not scary, chase that my son wiggles and giggles at. He always will grab this book to have it read at reading times. the illustrations are great for kids. one page with color the next black and white. great book, highly recommend this book for children of any age.
My three year old likes the book OK, but not one of his favorites. Our one year old shows no interest. I had read great reviews about the book, but I don't enjoy reading this one. We prefer the Dr. Suess books, Sandra Boynton books, Daddy Kisses, Mommy Hugs . . . .
