More than just a pair of days, a weekend is also a state of minda feeling of relaxation and freedom to immerse ourselves fully in a favorite activity. InWeekend Sewing, designer Heather Ross presents creative projects for clothing, accessories, and home items that can be made in a weekend or less. Some, like the Quick Garden Gloves and Ruby’s Bloomers, take a few hours; others, like the Weekend-Away Travel Bag and Trapeze Sundress, require a day or twobut all of them capture that weekend feeling.

And because weekends are often the most fun when they’re social, Ross features ideas that encourage us to share our stitching and our time, such as a recipe for soup to simmer while sewing, then serve to guests later in the day, and tips for transporting a sewing machine to a friend’s house for an afternoon of social stitching.

The sewing instructions are beautifully illustrated, and patterns for the projects are included on pullout sheets.

  • Good Book

Besides offering many projects, I was pleasantly surprised that several of the patterns are tucked inside the front and back dust cover of this book, making the projects even easier. That is so convenient! What I like even more is the variety of projects. There are projects for everyone and even the more "traditional" patterns (like aprons) aren't dull and boring. Instead, they are bright and attractive and yet don't look too difficult. I also enjoyed the hidden treasures in this book like a delicious looking recipe for squash soup on page 31 or blueberry mash for babies on page 127. Whatever type of short-term project you're interested in, whether it's a pup tent and pillow, charmingly cheerful (and definitely NOT dorky) guest-room slippers, fabric travel bags, stunning summer dresses (I've just got to lose weight so I can make me up a dozen of them; the pattern does not look complicated and the dresses look simple to wear, but charming and delightful!) or kimonos for babies, I don’t believe you will be disappointed in this book!
