This was an unusual book . I wasn't sure I would like it since it was about a boy who quit veterinary school to join a circus after his parents died, and he couldn't continue his schooling at Harvard. However, it was an engrossing book involving a great cast of characters and a sweet love story which should also appeal to animal lovers. I loved the ending - not what I expected. We should all have an ending like his.

I laughed, cried, got angry, and every other emotion right along with these characters! I wasn't sure at first, but Jill told me to persevere and I am so glad I did. This is definitely a different kind of story with a lot of descriptive scenes and perfectly worded chapters. I was so happy by the end of the story that I didn't even want to get out of the car. I wanted to let it all soak in. Very good!

This was a very unusual, interesting book and well worth the read.

This is the perfect book for a rainy day. Quick read, interesting story. Sure, there are better pieces of fiction, but this one's not terrible. It serves its purpose.

It should be prefaced that I read this book after finishing The Kite Runner (excellent book), and was looking for a change of pace from the more serious nature of the subject matter. Not only did Water For Elephants deliver, but it far exceeded my expectations. While I am male, Sara Gruen delivered an exciting story revolving around an interesting romance, and yet maintained historical accuracy without making me feel like I was watching the history channel. The book paid great attention to historical accounts of the circus and circus happenings, and was extremely hard to put down. From beginning to end, the story was upbeat without any of the "lulls" that often accompany lengthy fictional works. All-in-all, I would not only recommend this book, but I will be one of the first in line for the upcoming movie in 2011 as well. Enjoy!

This book was well written and very descriptive. I found myself learning a lot about the circus, which is something that I find interesting and finished the book in a matter of days. I felt for the characters, particularly Rosie (the elephant). An uplifting story about a man reliving an important, life-changing part of his life.

What a fun read. I read this as a first book discussion group experience and am now hookied. I loved the book and even though I finished it well over a week ago, I am still thinking aobut the characters and changing my mind about what the author had in mind to portray. This book has lots of interesting characters and subplots.

This book will have you reveling in the life of the circus. It's captivating, exciting and a fun summer read. The ending is a little obnoxious and fanatasy, but otherwise a great book!

I was a little uncertain of what this book would be like with such a strange title. But within 3 pages I was totally engrossed in the story. I looked forward each day to getting home from work and chores and picking this book up again. I was sorry to see it end. The author was an excellent storyteller and I will make it my goal to read all that she writes.

This was an engaging, well written story. I finished it in just one evening and was sorry to see it end. The characters and settings were colorful, descriptive, and lively. It's been a while since I've read a work of fiction so deserving of a captive audience. Too bad the behind the scenes exploitations and abuses haven't changed.

This book was very entertaining! It held my attention at every page. The writer takes your imagination to the behind scenes of circus life as remembered by an old man! I would recomend this book to anyone. It will passed out to all my friends!

Water For Elephants was an awesome book. Best book I have read lately and I READ A LOT! I kept wondering how this book could end in a satisfactory way. I was definitely not displeased with the ending. Surprised, but not displeased. But, I didn't want the book to end. I wanted to continue reading and reading. Great story and great story telling.

Couldn't put this book down. Fascinating. The author made the 1930's circus life come alive. Loved the ending. A must read!
