Christian. When CMH named this collection, they decided to go for broke. Their collection wouldn`t just include the best banjo picking from eastern Virginia, or the South, or even the entire United States. Instead, it would be World`s Greatest Bluegrass Banjos. To back up their assertion, CMH brought together recordings by banjoists like Vic Jordon, Sonny Osborne, and Grandpa Jones. There`s a nifty version of "Limehouse Blues" by Eddie Addock that even includes some nifty guitar and a bouncy take on "Dueling Banjos" by Don Reno. Lester Flatt & the Nashville Grass deliver a charged-up rendition of "Roll in My Sweet Baby`s Arms" with the help of Kenny Ingram`s speedy banjo technique, while Arthur Smith and Don Reno cut loose on a funky piece titled "Memphis Five String," which sounds a little like a mountaineer`s version of "Memphis." While World`s Greatest Bluegrass Banjos sells itself on the strength of its five-string material, many of these pieces leave room for fiddle, mandolin, and guitar solos, sweetening the package. A number of these songs/instrumentals, like "Soldier`s Joy," will be familiar, but there are also pleasant surprises like a banjo-infused "Tequila."
