Sony Music Special Products` The Best of Country Music has such a ludicrously broad title that it should not, by any means, be taken seriously, as if it were truly the "best" of country music. It should instead be thought of as a sampler of highlights from the Columbia and Epic vaults, leaning toward `70s country-pop and honky tonk. There are a few older cuts, such as Tammy Wynette`s "Stand by Your Man" and Marty Robbins` "El Paso City," but they`re outweighed by such `70s staples as Willie Nelson`s "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain," Lynn Anderson`s "Rose Garden," Tanya Tucker`s "Delta Dawn," Johnny Paycheck`s "Take This Job and Shove It," Moe Bandy`s "It`s a Cheating Situation," and Charlie Rich`s "Behind Closed Doors," which is neither here nor there, since that lineup provides enough thrills to justify its budget price. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
