Two-Lane Blacktop
Two Lane is a period piece not intended to take you there but to give you some incite to the time. Many of us grew up in the time when free living, and that's what this one is all about, was not just possible but practiced. To try and put too much into the characters would detract from the basic message, that being that freedom of the road doesn't mean freedom from life. The driver and the mechanic escape from social pressure through gypsy drag racing until the Girl comes into the picture, not by thier choice, and causes problems by her presence alone. GTO on the other hand causes his own problems by just being what he is. Is there intended to be a message in this? There was when the movie came out, but nothing relevant now. It IS, however, a good flic to take you back to younger days when you still believed this life was attractive, if not desireable. The additional material does add considerably to the value of this movie. Kids won't get it but those of us who haven't forgotten our youth will enjoy it as much as the first time we saw it.
