This is a terrific book that presents hard science and makes a clear and compelling case for how meditation and training the brain to focus its attention can make quantifiable changes in the brain and brain chemistry. It is easy reading that takes the time to tell the long story of how the understanding of the brain and what it can do has changed. Conventional wisdom was that the brain can't change for adults, but a series of experiments have proven that brain plasticity is a reality for adults - and important for overall health. The author brings her own credibility as the science editor for The Wall Street Journal to bear on this subject. The book also tracks the course of a series of discussions over time that scientists have had with the Dali Lama to explore the real-world benefits of meditation and the possibilities of real change. The Dali Lama's curiosity and interest in science was as critical to this exploration as was the scientists desire to quantify what actually happens, how it happens and how long any changes may last when the brain's miraculous neuro network is engaged.
