BUY THIS! This is an epic album, although it might take some people a while to agree. The experimental time changes and phenominal playing is not the trendy simple catchy phrases you hear on the radio. This is not POP! So don't expect to have it immediately stuck in your head. The lyrics here are very emotional and quite angry at times. The album is more balanced between the instruments with everyone getting a fair share of playing time than in previous albums. There is alot of creative use with harmonics on strings and experimental rythyms. Maynard is not as pronounced on this album but still amazes throughout. Do yourself a favor and listen to this on a great pair of headphones without interuption for the first time through and listen a few times through before final judgements. Album breakdown. Starting with track one, (Vicarious) you will here an odd timed groove very reminescent of the Lateralus album but hold on because a quick change will take you into a heavy complex groove. Overall a little heavier tool than you're used to with Maynard's vocals on the angry side. Trying to count this timing could get difficult. Lots of changes in this one with phenominal bass playing and as always Danny Carey is right on. Track two: (Jambi) The beginning of this track shows the Meshuggah influence on the band recently. Heavy quick playing is quickly followed by cleaner vocals by MJK. Very experimental on this one. Jambi builds you up over and over again but never lets you down. More guitar riffs so far on the album. On there way to an epic album. Track three: (Wings for Marie part 1) This is actually around 17 minutes long between part 1 and 2. Starts slow and lets you relax a little from the first two tracks. This one reminds me of Pink Floyd. Lots of panning on this one, sounds great on a good system. Kind of has a soft Parabola feel in the beginning darkening as it goes along. It's uplifting to finally here some good new music out. Track four: (Wings for Marie part 2) Picks up where part 1 left off darker then part 1 in the beginning with alot of bass and light drumming. Seems to have the sound of a storm in the background. Like one of the neverending Floyd jam sessions but with Bonham behind the set rather than Mason. Some religous references in the one that you'll have to interpret yourself. Can't wait to feel this stuff Live! Wings for Marie will probably be overlooked upon first listen because of the length and the long instrumental gaps only to be savored as it gets more familiar. Very strong finish. Track number 5 (The pot) Here is a side of Maynard we haven't seen in the beginning singing clean before the music starts with a bass groove that should inspire Claypool. This one makes you move with agreat vocals and a title that denotes accurate subject matter. This ones like the bag of L*y's potato chips, once you start it you can't stop. A borderline drug with a quick addiction. Track number 6 (Lipan Conjuring) A segue. Track number 7 (lost keys blame Hoffman) A seque. Track number 8 (Rosetta Stoned) A definate Meshuggah influence on this one particularly in the beginning. Very heavy fast distorted lyrics that don't clean till the middle. Jazz influence on the drumming with a Carey twist. about 5 minutes in you get some AEnima characteristics followed by some odd timed bass a percussion rythym and a solo from Adam that couldn't classify as typical. Gets thicker towards the ending with and angry finish. Track number nine (Intension) Some bouncy bass percussion and a fluid bass lines start slow, MJK enters almost immediately. Some hand rythym enters in with a heavy tabla influence from Aloke Dutta. About four minutes in you get a change with a new riff from Adam Jones and a funky electronic percussion that shows off Danny's Intricasy and dedication to percussion. Track number ten (Right in Two) An epic tool intro with some off beat harmonics thrown into to throw you off just enough. This is one of my favorites. The lyrics are deep and moving. Some tribal rythyms in the middle again widening the talent gap between Danny and other rock drummers. Influence from all previous albums on the one with lots of new experimental sound. Track number eleven (Viginti Tres) A segue.

Great Album

boaty1302 from Charlotte, NC, Apr 16, 2008

This is one of the few CD's I have bought in the past few years given the rise of the MP3 market place. I must say, buying the actual CD is totally worth it. First off, The album art is incredible, and it comes with cool 3D viewer to look at everything. May seem kind of lame, but Maynard James Keenen makes it awesome. The Music is awesome. Like most Tool albums, you have to listen to the whole thing a few times, and then the songs really grow on you to a point where you almost can't stop listeneing to the CD. I am very happy with the purchase, and I am glad that iTunes does not carry Tool, otherwise I would have downloaded it and never even known about the Album Art.
