Not to be confused with the 1967 Mercury soundtrack of the same name, TURN ON, TUNE IN , DROP OUT is the first available CD version of Dr. Timothy Leary`s original 1966 spoken-word LP on ESP-Disk. In a low-key, quasi-hypnotic voice that`s either soothing or disturbing in equal measure, Dr. Leary hawks his message of raised consciousness through psychoactive drugs in persistent and persuasive fashion. But is this album anything more than a camp `60s artifact nearly 50 years after its time? Whether or not a contemporary audience is truly open to Leary`s message, one wouldn`t deny that TURN ON is still a genuine if creepy meditative experience, and not that far removed from similar recordings by fellow gurus like Alan Watts or Baba Ram Dass.
