Following the magnificent reissue of 1968`s classic ODESSEY AND ORACLE, with both stereo and mono mixes on one disc, Big Beat concludes the reissue series begun with 1997`s near-perfect four-disc box set ZOMBIE HEAVEN by reissuing the quintet`s other album, 1964`s BEGIN HERE. As keyboardist Rod Argent and bassist Chris White didn`t blossom as songwriters until towards the end of the three-year stretch of singles between the two albums, most of BEGIN HERE consists of blues and R&B covers such as "Road Runner," "You Really Got A Hold On Me," and "I Got My Mojo Workin`," all of which work surprisingly well in the more delicate, jazz-inflected context of Argent`s electric piano, Paul Atkinson`s spare guitar and Colin Blunstone`s breathy vocals. Besides the classic "She`s Not There," the album`s highlight is the definitive cover of George and Ira Gershwin`s "Summertime." The remastered CD contains liner notes and bonus tracks.
