A massive underground sensation, The Big Lebowski has been hailed as the first cult film of the internet age. In this book, 21 fans and scholars address the film's influences--westerns, noir, grail legends, the 1960s, and Fluxus--and its historical connections to the first Iraq war, boomers, slackerdom, surrealism, college culture, and of course bowling. The Year's Work in Lebowski Studies contains neither arid analyses nor lectures for the late-night crowd, but new ways of thinking and writing about film culture.

  • Some good essays and a few clunkers

The essays in this book are divided into two sections: Part 1--Intrinsic Models & Influences, and Part 2--Eccentric Activities & Behaviors. The essays in part 1 are a mixed bag. Some are insightful and draw interesting comparisons (ie: the Big Lebowski's similarities to a medieval grail quest or to the legend of Rip Van Winkle.) Most of the other essays in part 1, however, compare the Big Lebowski to obscure films that you'd need a masters degree in cinematic history to recognize. On top of that, they endlessly cite the same handful of quotes from the film. Comparisons start to feel forced; the joy of reading gives way to page skimming in search of new or more interesting content. The real gold in this book lies in part 2. Here, the essays delve into richer waters examining the quirky characters in the film and their cultural implications. Even the film's die hard fans are examined. Want to learn about the cultural connotations of bowling? Been thinking about the significance of white russians in Lebowski's world (or your own)? If you answered yes to any of these questions then the latter half of this book will leave you satisfied.
