Many Americans know about "the Dust Bowl" from the songs of Woody Guthrie (who experienced it) or from the famous book and film of Steinbeck`s THE GRAPES OF WRATH. In THE WORST HARD TIME, Timothy Egan reminds us that, while many left the Dust Bowl to start a new life out West, others chose to remain and live as best as they could. Many died; others made it through, and Egan`s account of 12 families who did is based on interviews with survivors, many in their nineties, who tell firsthand what it was like.

  • Very good historical read

I really enjoyed this book. I did not know much about the period of the Dust Bowl going into this book. However, being from the panhandle of Texas I was immediately interested as it referenced many places I was very familiar with. Bits of the book get a little tedious (dust, dust and more dust!) But mainly held my interest very well. Would definitely recommend.

  • gift

gave as gift, along with other items. this book was especially appreciated.

  • Piece of History---

Tells it like it was..Dark days in our history about very hardy and determined people.

  • The Worst Hard Time

I grew up learning that the Dust Bowl was a difficult time for our country. Little did I realize just how much suffering and sacrifice the people in the region experienced. This book relates the true stories of the tremendous struggles of individuals and families that lived and died during this time. What true tenacity and grit these people had. The book educates the reader as to the hows and whys the Dust Bowl occurred. The author explains how the destruction of land, weather conditions and economic failure lead to this horrific time in the 1930's. If you read it, you will undoubtedly come away with a new understanding of the time and a great appreciation for those people. It's well written and a great book to own.

  • Fascinating read!

I loved reading about this dark period in this country's history--something I knew little about. I'd read about the Joad family's struggle in The Grapes of Wrath (which was made during the "final" year of this tragic event), but didn't know how they and their countrymen came to be in such predicament. Today when people blame their government for all ills that befall them, reading "The Worst Hard Time" might give them an insight into what their lives could be like if it really did betray them out of greed. The personal accounts by actual people who survived the period--and the dust!--are gut-wrenching. Timothy Egans has done a masterful job of blending facts and the experiences of the survivors. Great read!

  • Starred ReviewEgan tells an extraordinary tale in this visceral account of how America's great, grassy plains turned to dust, and how the ferocious plains winds stirred up an endless series of "black blizzards" that were like a biblical plague: "Dust clouds boiled up, ten thousand feet or more in the sky, and rolled like moving mountains" in what became known as the Dust Bowl. But the plague was man-made, as Egan shows: the plains weren't suited to farming, and plowing up the grass to plant wheat, along with a confluence of economic disaster-the Depression-and natural disaster-eight years of drought-resulted in an ecological and human catastrophe that Egan details with stunning specificity. He grounds his tale in portraits of the people who settled the plains: hardy Americans and immigrants desperate for a piece of land to call their own and lured by the lies of promoters who said the ground was arable. Egan's interviews with survivors produce tales of courage and suffering: Hazel Lucas, for instance, dared to give birth in the midst of the blight only to see her baby die of "dust pneumonia" when her lungs clogged with the airborne dirt. With characters who seem to have sprung from a novel by Sinclair Lewis or Steinbeck, and Egan's powerful writing, this account will long remain in readers' minds. (Dec. 14) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC.
