A train of 50 railroad cars approaches, each one ornately decorated to resemble an antique circus wagon dedicated to one state in the United States of America--with a Washington, DC caboose. Each one rolls up in the order that the state it represents was admitted to the union, and they all have their state`s flag, nickname, motto (translated into English), flower, bird, and tree emblazoned on at least one part of the design, along with portraits of presidents and other luminaries and pictures of signature sites like Mount Rushmore. A line of trivia is also included ("In Barrow, Alaska`s northernmost point, the sun doesn`t set for 84 days during the summer months" [although it doesn`t caution the reader to either stay away from there in the winter or bring a strong flashlight], or "North Dakota has 63 National Wildlife Refuges, more than any other state"). Peter Sis`s full-color ink-and-watercolor wash illustrations give the project an impact, and deliver a lot of facts about the states to the young reader in a very unusual way.
