Although practicing clinicians may be aware of the medical and psychological aspects of suicidal patients, they may be unaware of some of the legal aspects of care for such people. Bonger (psychology, Stanford U. School of Medicine) attempts to integrate the legal and medical issues to offer advice on what clinicians should be aware of in treating suicidal patients in both inpatient and outpatient contexts. The focus of the work is on proper methods of assessment, management, and treatment and reflects the opinions of both Bonger and his legal consultant Eric Harris (a risk management consultant for APA Insurance Trust). Advice is also provided to the clinician on legal steps to take in the event a patient does commit suicide. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
