The Road
from Pittsburgh, PA,  May 4, 2007

Pulitzer prize winning tale of an extraordinary love between a father and his son trying to survive despite desperate conditions. It is a very heavy, heart-wrenching story which holds you until the very end.

This book sticks with you
 from Indian Mound,TN,  Mar 2, 2010

This was one of the most profound books I've ever read. It's written so simply, yet through that simple language the author manages to portray such complex internal experiences. Don't expect a happy little fairy tale story, this is a deep novel of realism.

Briliant
 from California,  Aug 3, 2008

Cormac McCarthy is a brilliant writer. His sentences are short, concise and profound. The Road is a look at what would happen at the end of our world from Cormac McCarthy's perspective. It is dark and bleak with a flicker of light. The story follows the journey of a father and son and their struggle to survive. I was deeply moved by their bond and the hope and faith that they had in each other. I finished the book in 2 days- needless to say, I had a very hard time putting it down.

The Road is an amazing book
from Chicago, IL,  Mar 8, 2008

At once brutal and tender, despairing and hopeful, The Road is McCarthy¿s brave and unforgettable meditation on the thin line between humanity and chaos. I haven't read anything like it, and I will read it again and again. Truly a book that will stay with you forever.

Great writing, depressing story
from Atlanta, GA,  Feb 1, 2008

When co-workers asked me why I appeared so irritible and "not yourself" during the week I read this book, I realized it had gotten to me more than any other book in a long time. If the characters were not so real, I would not have felt that I was on the journey with them. It will stay with you for a long time, but you will want to read it again.

While there are several books recommended by Oprah that I've really enjoyed (The Poinsonwood Bible especially) this one was not only a difficult read but very depressing as well. It seemed to ramble on with neither father or son behaving in any way as human beings--simply automatons in a post apocalyptic world--I would avoid this one.

The Road

A bleak story. However it is so well told and the redeeming factor is the love shown the son by the father on this horrendous journey. Then the reciprocation by the son at the end touches the heart.

The Road
 from Mariposa, CA 95338,  Nov 1, 2007

THE ROAD is an excellently written book. The author obviously knows and uses all the tricks for good writing. However, the darkness of this novel, it's lack of even one moment of joy or glimpse of hope leaves me wondering why? Why would anyone want to write this or read it (except for scholarly perusal or critique)?.

AWESOME!!!
 Oct 10, 2007

This book was written in such a way as to portray ONLY what is necessary. It was not overwritten and worth the Pulitzer Prize it received. I recommend having a friend read it as well, for it is something one needs to talk about when done reading.

Love love love!
from Lansing, MI,  Aug 20, 2007

McCarthy has an interesting writing style, that if you are not used to, takes 20-30 pages to grasp. Personally, I very much enjoy this style of writing and feel that it works so well for this particular novel. Heart wrenching, depressing, hopeful... this book has it all. I couldn't put it down, and just gave it to my Dad to read. One of the best novels I've read this year. Don't miss this one.

Chilling
 from Chicago,  May 18, 2007

This book was a little strange, I suppose the author wanted you to use your imagination to determine what exactly took place in the world, however I think I needed a little more from him. The writing was extremely well done, I think I just needed a little more.

The Road by Cormac McCarthy
from Fort Myers, Florida,  Apr 29, 2007

I was impressed by the author's ability to provide such a detailed description of what the world would be like, and the difficult circumstances its few surviving inhabitants would endure, following a most catastrophic event. However, I cannot say that I really enjoyed this book. It just did not leave me wanting to tell everyone to read it.
