The Platters merged Tin Pan Alley pop with just enough R&B grit to prefigure what came to be known as soul, and they were one of the most important vocal groups of the 1950s. Unfortunately, this 20-song set consists of re-recordings of the group`s hits done for Musicor Records in the late `60s after Sonny Turner had replaced Tony Williams as the Platters` lead singer. These aren`t horrible recordings by any means, but they still feel like a series of facsimiles standing in for the real deal. ~ Steve Leggett
