Description:

Readers of books by popular health writers such as Dr. Andrew Weil and others will recognize the phrase Mediterranean diet, which is recommended repeatedly because of its heart-healthy qualities. Just what IS a Mediterranean diet? is the question Marissa Cloutier and Eve Adamson answer in this reasoned and informative guide. The authors provide an overview of the diet using a helpful question-and-answer format, followed by a breakdown by food item, along with information on vitamins, antioxidants, and the benefits and sources of Omega-3. They have also designed a Mediterranean diet food pyramid that compares to the USDA and AHA pyramids. Their recipes are easy to follow and to prepare, and the cuisine adjusts easily to a single person as well as to a family. Foods can be introduced in a variety of ways, at any meal: if you realize that lunch is your undoing, you can change that unhealthy habit by simply following one or two of the authors's suggestions. The authors present what they stress are merely guidelines in a highly supportive manner, and convince us that the Mediterranean way is both a diet and a lifestyle that is reachable for American families.

Not a Diet

gailbloom from Long Island, NY, Oct 29, 2009

If you're looking to lose weight don't buy this book. It might be good for you but not to your waistline. I started to follow it and GAINED WEIGHT. Nuts and seeds are especially fattening and although I didn't eat much of them, it was enough to push my weight UP 2 pounds instead of down. Me, I'll stick to Weight Watchers. That is a healthy diet and you lose weight on it. If we ate everything we're told to eat to be healthy, we'd all be fat (fruit, nuts, olive oil, etc.). How can people eat so many servings of food each day as indicated on the food pyramid and lose weight or even stay thin if they are already thin. I'll be feeding all those nuts and seeds to the squirrels!!!

The Mediterranean Diet

redfoxtwo from Spring Hill, FL, Feb 29, 2008

This book was recommended by our doctor. I am still reading this book, but am very impressed by the author's information. We are currently on this diet , have been for a short time, and we will be changing our eating and lifestyle, thanks to this book. This is the healthy way to diet and eat. Am looking forward to using the Mediterranean Cookbook also.
