A solo(-ish) project of Scooter Ward, lead singer for uber-`90s-post-grunge rockers Cold, Killer & the Star owe more to U2 than Pearl Jam on their eponymous 2009 debut LP. The ten Ward-penned cuts on KILLER & THE STAR revel in symphonic power pop, rich with piano trills, prog rock synth riffs, hyperactive percussion, and off-kilter, often Gothic twists. In one of the odder moves, Ward gleefully gives himself over to the auto-tuned world, as his ever-powerful voice synthetically leaps octaves; it is a particularly effective gimmick on tracks like the wistfully soulful "End of Summer." While it may leave some harder-edged Cold fans befuddled, the pomp and glorious excess of Killer & the Star should please many others, and Ward has a keen ear for the pop hook.
