The Hot Club of Cowtown`s second album is as winning as their debut, released just a year prior. Furthermore, they`re exhibiting smart and meaningful growth. Their first original compositions are in amongst the fifteen tracks this time out. There`s a fine track written by fiddler and vocalist Elana Fremerman, and a couple more by guitarist/singer Whit Smith. The rest of the material deftly mixes the trio`s love of American songcraft with their passion for western swing and the 1930s and `40s hot jazz of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli. They`ve also broadened the instrumental palette, with guest appearances on a few songs by Peter Ecklund on cornet, Joe Kerr on piano, and Marty Lester on an additional violin. The Hot Club is a tight and swinging combo that mixes amiable arrangements with prodigious instrumental skills.
