Description:

At the beginning of the civil rights movement, in Jackson, Mississippi, three singular women bond together to share the stories of dozens of the city`s black servants, who have remained voiceless for too long.

Naive Skeeter is just home from college, with big dreams of becoming a journalist, though her mother just wants her to find a husband.

Aibileen, a black maid and the foundation of her household, is working hard to raise her seventeenth white child.

Minnie is Aibileen's best friend and the city's best cook, but is unable to find a job because of her inclination to boldly speak her mind.

Together, these three unforgettable women launch a crusade to collect the stories of the town`s servants, and try to eliminate the silent racial barriers that traverse the homes and hearts of everyone in Jackson.

    • Outstanding Book!

This book was voted one of my book club's favorite reads! The story was set in Jackson, Mississippi during the 60s, when racial tension was at its apex. Kristen Stockett did an outstanding job of weaving the lives of three women, all with a different story, into the book. The book moved between each person with ease, leaving me anxious to find out what would happen next! I was so drawn into the stories, I hardly noticed the pages turn - and then suddenly I was nearing the end! I found myself rooting for and admiring the courage, strength, and perseverance of the 'heroes' in the book. I would highly recommend this to anyone searching for a wonderful book that shares a glimpse of the past, and the people who were the foundation for a better future.

    • The Help

I could not put this book down! Picked it up one afternoon and was finished with it by the next day. I loved the characters in this book. What strength, fortitude and courage these women possessed. Kathryn Stockett written pages reminds me of "To Kill a Mockingbird". I am really looking forward to her next book. Hurry up!

    • Overstock puchases

I have puchased several items (large and small) from Overstock.com and am completely satisfied. I purchased a Pub table and stools that is absolutely goregeous, a metal leaf hangling chandelier/light that is also just like the picture online and I can wait to hang it. I have purchased books and bed linen and can honestly say that none of the puchases made from Overstock have disappointed me. I have not had to return anything and am constantly online looking for additional deals. Love it, love it, love it!

    • The Help

In January my book club read "The Help" and I totally loved it . . . and the insight it added to my life. I have given this book as a birthday gift three times. Each friend thoroughly enjoyed it and passed it on to their daughters. For a first novel it is outstanding . . . as the pages turned, you never wanted it to end . . . and I'm still waiting for the saga to continue. Please Kathryn, tell us more! To Overstock, thanks for making a birthday miles away a very happy one . . . as always, you deliver!!!

    • Engrossing Topic

I was so sad when this book ended for it was a fabulous read. I seldom find books about women that are so interesting and necessary , still, in our society. I began reading at 10 pm and could not put it down until 5 am the next morning! This story is excellent, and I hope Ms Stockett continues to write about women because it's true that we are all just women.

    • The Help

The book was good. The situtations were life like. The book brought back old memories and the book was basic on actual facts and situations that I lived with and through. The locations in the book are locations I am familiar with in Jackson, MS. The timing of the book was before I moved to Jackson. I have visist some of the locations in the book. I saw the movie before reading the book. The book has a lot more details. But both the book and movie are real life situations.

  • Starred ReviewWhat perfect timing for this optimistic, uplifting debut novel (and maiden publication of Amy Einhorn's new imprint) set during the nascent civil rights movement in Jackson, Miss., where black women were trusted to raise white children but not to polish the household silver. Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan is just home from college in 1962, and, anxious to become a writer, is advised to hone her chops by writing "about what disturbs you." The budding social activist begins to collect the stories of the black women on whom the country club sets relies--and mistrusts--enlisting the help of Aibileen, a maid who's raised 17 children, and Aibileen's best friend Minny, who's found herself unemployed more than a few times after mouthing off to her white employers. The book Skeeter puts together based on their stories is scathing and shocking, bringing pride and hope to the black community, while giving Skeeter the courage to break down her personal boundaries and pursue her dreams. Assured and layered, full of heart and history, this one has bestseller written all over it. (Feb.) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved
