"The Gift of Nothing" is a picture book based on daily strips of the "Mutts" comic series (the volume that contains these strips is "More Shtuff", the third black-and-white collection of "Mutts"). As Christmas draws near, Mooch the cat wonders what gift to give his friend, Earl the dog. The first difficulty is that Earl seems to have everything he needs. The second difficulty is that, when Mooch decides to give a "gift of nothing", he cannot find "nothing" anywhere. How will Mooch show his friendship through giving nothing? Besides exploring the concepts of friendship and giving, the story also gently satirizes the commercialization of the holidays.
This book is one of my favorites! I am a college counselor at a high school, and I give the book to select students for high school graduation. Traditionally, I read the book aloud to my graduating senior class. We always shed tears of joy as we discuss the meaning of the story. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an appreciation of friendship.
This is an awesome book. I bought this as a Christmas gift for both my daughter and my neice. It portrayed a great message. I enjoyed reading this to her at Christmas time when we sometimes get so caught up in things that we forget what is truely important. This book shows that what is really important is the love and friendship between two people. After reading this I have to say in the future when i'm in need of a children's gift I will be buying another copy of this. I will also be watching for new books written by this author.
