  • Potentially Lifechanging

    It's a proven fact that 98% of diets fail. Is it the dieter who fails, or the diets who fail? Could it possibly be true that the traditional American weight-loss diet is all wrong? Is healthy eating really no fat and low fat? Not according to this book. The concepts in this book are mindblowing, a complete reversal to what we've been taught is the right way to eat and lose weight. What if, instead of the chore of eating non-tasty cardboard diet foods, the right way to lose weight really is about savoring and satisfaction? What if, instead of eating an amount that some diet guru dictates on some diet plan, you eat, and stop according to what your body dictates? What if real eating is eating butter and cream, cheeses, chocolate, wine and bread? And desserts? Even though one can eat all these things on this plan, this isn't a miracle plan. I think it is hard work to learn to savor and not shovel. I think it is hard work to learn to find that fullness point and to stop eating because I've had enough, and not because my plate is empty. I think it is hard work to chop some vegetables and make a nice cheese sauce instead of throwing something ready made from the freezer into the microwave. I think it is hard work to set a nice table, light a candle and put on soft music. If slowing down isn't for you, DON'T try this book. The bottom line is about what works. Do diets work? They haven't worked for me and I've tried 'em all. They don't work because I am hungry and constantly thinking about the next meal. They don't work because diet food tastes bland, so I hurry and eat it to get it out of the way. And even though I don't enjoy my meal, I want more. On this, (it's only been a week) I am eating less because I am satisfied and don't want any more. It's almost a gag reflex--enough about food now. Let's get on to living. I think this book is potentially life changing. Ask me again in 6 months.

  • The French Don't Diet Plan

    As someone with a health degree, I have long had a fascination with both health and our often faddish attempts to attain it. So I frequently read many of the new diet and exercise books that come out just for the entertainment value they afford me. In that context, this book is a standout. The title gives away the key message, that if we all chill out, enjoy our food and our lives, we'll get healthier by doing just that. Even the meal plan in the back of the book is realistic. And the recipes are both easy and great. (Try the lasagna!) A book I picked out just to see what the latest potential food/diet fad might be turned out to have some tips that have changed my eating habits and brought more pleasure into life. As a hedonist, I highly recommend it.
