People who want to grow food in their front yards--at least, people who live where neighbors can see their front yards--know that critics will come out of the woodwork if poles and chicken wire spring up along with the tomatoes. So, necessity being the mother of invention, the author (well-known for her lively gardening blog, The Germinatrix) has figured out a wealth of possible solutions, and she presents them in a book that is both stunning and instructive. She covers the bases, from selecting ornamental edibles (herbs and fruits as well as vegetables) to the "mechanics" of planting, irrigating, fertilizing, and harvesting them. However, it is her overall passion for design and her many examples and suggestions (combining raised beds, window boxes, stone and ceramic planters; creating paths and patio spaces; mingling flower accents among the veggies) that will convince even novice gardeners to devote whatever time, money, and sweat they can spare to make their edible front yard, or any other garden they create, as lovely as it is useful. The terrific and abundant photographs add a great deal as well.

I will spend the spring and summer putting the books ideas to use in my back yard. In California it seems ridiculous to waste water on grass when there are many drought tolerant plants that are edible, fragrant and much more attractive. I recommend this book.
