During the Spanish Civil War, newly orphaned Carlos is taken to a school for the children of those who died fighting against fascism. He is given the bed that formerly belonged to Santi, a boy who recently died during an attack in which a bomb dropped, landing in the school's courtyard undetonated, a reminder of impending danger. As the amputee headmistress (Marisa Paredes, ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER) and the embittered caretaker, Jacinto (Eduardo Noriega), engage in a love affair, the headmistress' cuckolded husband, the impotent but benevolent school doctor (Frederico Luppi) sits by passively. Meanwhile, after Santi's ghost repeatedly reveals itself to Carlos, another student spooks Carlos with a dark secret about the boy's death. War surrounds the school, violence infests it from within, and Carlos sets out to avenge the death of Santi.

Taking on themes such as the brutality of war and the loss of innocence, Guillermo del Toro's (MIMIC) film skillfully combines elements of war, gothic horror, melodrama, and adventure to create a work that functions as both a genre film and a politically resonant piece of nostalgia. THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE uses history as a means of transforming what would otherwise be a routine ghost story into a powerful and affecting statement.

WARNING!!!!!!!! The Listing is Wrong.

sob3000 from Indiana, Aug 14, 2008

While this is a great movie, the listing here for it is wrong. They say this is a two-disc set and there is only one. They say there is an English track and it is in Spainish with English subtitles. This is a real good movie and they do have some good extras, but I feel you should be warned what to expect if you order this.

I liked it, but not a movie for the masses

shamrockoshea from Petersburg, VA, Jun 9, 2008

The Devil's Backbone deals with many complex relationships in an orphanage. The complexities are not just amongst the living and breathing residents, but also between them and the "one who sighs". This movie really blurs the line between the living and the dead.

Superb.!

A fantastic film by Pedro Almodovar, the acting is real good, a child has been murdered and nobody seems to know how, somehow he will come back to punish his murderer, the trama has place in an orfanage in a far away place of Spain.. excellent movie.

Suspenseful and eerie

sylter from Stockton, ca, May 12, 2008

I found this movie to be excellent. It is worthwhile and a great addition to a DVD collection. I saw it after watching Pan's Labrynth and was not familiar with the Director Guillermo Del Toro but after watching pan's Labrynth I was interested in seeing more of his work. This movie was made before Pan's Labrynth and is fascinating, suspenseful, and visually powerful. I gave away my previous copy and so this is a replacement that I do not plan on giving away.
