Description:
In today's sewing world, serger and overlock are the synonymous words used to describe a compact machine that quickly trims, seams, and overcasts the edge of a piece of fabric in one operation. According to Chris James, sewing teacher and author of The Complete Serger Handbook, the serger is the microwave or CD player of the sewing world. You really don't know if you need one, but once you have it, you don't know how you ever lived without it. Written for both the novice just taking the serger out of the box and the experienced user who needs a refresher on certain techniques, this comprehensive reference focuses on every aspect of serging, from the parts of the machine to creative design ideas. Evaluate the various types of thread on the market and find out what stitches and fabrics can be used. Understand serger tension theory and master various techniques. Learn to recognize when a serger can -- or should -- be used in place of a standard sewing machine. Troubleshooting and maintenance tips are also included to help ensure a long life for the machine. Intended as an additional instruction book and a serging friend, this handy guide will help users discover just how fast and fun a serger can be.

Customer Reviews
This book is a great overview of a serger's capabilities and full of tips to get the most use out of your serger (excellent thread selection guide). However, I was after more of a troubleshooting guide (ie which tension to adjust when your serging is less than perfect), which this is not - so I will be purchasing The Ultimate Serger Answer Guide (which I have previously borrowed from the library and know details much more in this area).

Everyone who owns a serger should have this book. Clear pictures and descriptions help you set up, adjust tensions and explain how to work the several stitches. Something to keep close to the serger!

I just bought a new serger, had never used one, and the user manual was not user friendly. This book had helped tremendously in understanding how my serger works. Thank you.
