Learning to play any instrument takes time. The author (David Hodge) knows this and starts with the the premise, you don't know ANYTHING about the instrument, and the possibility you haven't even bought your gear yet. He helps in those areas and then eases you into reading music (notes and tablature). He has a nice presentation of timing, chords, scales and key signatures. I'm only 1/3 into the guide and am looking forward to future subjects as outlined in the table of contents: Walking Bass Lines, Chord Progressions and different right and left hand techniques. The text ends with the bass application to different music styles: Rock 'n' Roll, Blues, Country, R&B, Jazz and World Music. Hodge's guide is complete with a CD containing 74 audio illustrations of written concepts and "bass-free" music to which you play along with your bass guitar. Only 4/5 stars because this is the only guide I've purchased on the subject and I have nothing to compare it to. However, I'm very pleased with the purchase.
