Junot Diaz was born in the Dominican Republic and raised in New Jersey. He is the author of the critically acclaimed Drown; The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, which won the 2008 Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award; and This Is How You Lose Her, a New York Times bestseller and National Book Award finalist. He is the recipient of a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship, PEN/Malamud Award, Dayton Literary Peace Prize, Guggenheim Fellowship, and PEN/O. Henry Award. A graduate of Rutgers College, Diaz is currently the fiction editor at Boston Review and the Rudge and Nancy Allen Professor of Writing at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Oscar is a sweet but disastrously overweight ghetto nerd who—from the New Jersey home he shares with his old world mother and rebellious sister—dreams of becoming the Dominican J.R.R. Tolkien and, most of all, finding love. But Oscar may never get what he wants. Blame the fuku—a curse that has haunted Oscar’s family for generations, following them on their epic journey from Santo Domingo to the USA. Encapsulating Dominican-American history, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao opens our eyes to an astonishing vision of the contemporary American experience and explores the endless human capacity to persevere—and risk it all—in the name of love.

    • Best Price on a Wonderful Book

Needed this book for a class, and Overstock had the best price. This is an intense, great read. If you are sensitive about foul language, this is not the book for you.

    • Compelling Read...

I read this book in about three sittings, it is written in very frank language as if you and the various narrarators are speaking over coffee, or a beer, or sitting in their bedroom (where you often are in this book). Its very intimate in that you get to know the characters without adornment or any gloss and the pacing is well done. The author loves his characters but he presents them honestly, "warts and all" as they say, so you feel as if you could know these people. Essentially you are told the stories of three generations of a family, but each generation's story is told in their present...yet it comes together and has a very moving ending. Its not for everyone in that there is violence and language and sex, but if you have friends who are real "readers" - I would easily recommend this book. The sheer energy with which the words come off the page is worth the price of admission. I'd liken it to the novel Middlesex, not in terms of plot necessarily, but that it is a gripping story of one family with a unique history, but to which every reader can find something relatable. I coulnd't understand the spanish spoken intermittently but it didn't impact my overall enjoyment of the book.
