When a little boy named Rajani ventures into the jungle, he runs into several tigers who make him give them his fine new red coat, blue trousers, purple shoes with crimson linings, and even his green umbrella! But Rajani outsmarts the tigers in the end, in this kinder retelling of Helen Bannerman’s Little Black Sambo. New illustrations and non-offensive names and character depictions make this story lovable again.

Exactly what I was looking for. My Grandmother read stories about little black Sambo to me when I would visit her as a child.

    • The Boy and the Tigers

This story was originally titled "Little Black Sambo". I read this book when I was a child and read it to my children as well. After nearly 50 years of reading, the cover and pages fell apart. My son requested this book along with other Little Golden Books as a birthday gift for his twin sons. I could not find the original title in print any longer, but The Boy and the Tigers is the same story; however the name of the boy has been changed. I'm sure there was some political-correctness involved in the changes, but it is sad that a childhood favorite and a family tradition has been changed because there is that disconnect now. My children were always anxious to get to the part of the story where the greedy tigers are chasing each other around the tree so fast that they spun themselves into butter, which "Little Black Sambo's" mother used to make all those pancakes. It is a fun story that teaches a good moral...that there are consequences for being rude and greedy. Even though the story has been renamed, I would highly recommend it. It is just sad to know that the original story has been lost. I would be thrilled if it made a come-back!
