    Kate Chopin (1850?1904) was an author of short stories and novels, mostly of a Louisiana Creole background. She is now considered to have been a forerunner of feminist authors of the 20th century.

Now considered a classic, this tale of liberation caused a scandal when it was first published and was dismissed as "vulgar," "unhealthy," and "morbid" by other contemporary reviewers, effectively ending Chopin's career.
