In July 2004, Barack Obama electrified the Democratic National Convention with an address that spoke to Americans across the political spectrum. One phrase in particular anchored itself in listeners’ minds, a reminder that for all the discord and struggle to be found in our history as a nation, we have always been guided by a dogged optimism in the future, or what Obama called “the audacity of hope.”
The Audacity of Hope is Barack Obama’s call for a different brand of politics—a politics for those weary of bitter partisanship and alienated by the “endless clash of armies” we see in congress and on the campaign trail; a politics rooted in the faith, inclusiveness, and nobility of spirit at the heart of “our improbable experiment in democracy.” He explores those forces—from the fear of losing to the perpetual need to raise money to the power of the media—that can stifle even the best-intentioned politician. He also writes, with surprising intimacy and self-deprecating humor, about settling in as a senator, seeking to balance the demands of public service and family life, and his own deepening religious commitment.
At the heart of this book is Barack Obama’s vision of how we can move beyond our divisions to tackle concrete problems. He examines the growing economic insecurity of American families, the racial and religious tensions within the body politic, and the transnational threats—from terrorism to pandemic—that gather beyond our shores. And he grapples with the role that faith plays in a democracy—where it is vital and where it must never intrude. Underlying his stories about family, friends, and members of the Senate is a vigorous search for connection: the foundation for a radically hopeful political consensus.

BARACK OBAMA was elected President of the United States on November 4, 2008. He is the author of one previous book, the New York Times bestseller Dreams from My Father.
this man is so warm, smart, sensitive to everyone's feelings.i can see him in a high office at a later date. he knows he is not perfect and can make mistakes, but realizes that if you are in the government, then you need to be there for all the people, not a chosen few. his views of the minorities;such as the poor, single parents, are what this country needs. this is what our country is made of - we have to face that and work for everyone. i have his previous book on order now. everyone should read this - some parts are somewhat boring(too political for me)but still a lot to be learned by everyone that picks it up.
After having read Obama's story of his family and his growing up, I was eager to find out more about his ideas and proposals for America's future. He is an exceptional writer. As he discusses America's problems, his philosophy and attitudes become apparent. He is compassionate snd devoted to helping others, especially those who seem to have no voice. Too often our leaders know about poor, disenfranchised individuals from a distance, as though they are studying a different species. Barack Obama has been one of the non-elite. He has worked to make life better for the poor and the unheard. He demonstrates his first-hand knowledge of regular folks' lives and explains how he would approach the problems America faces.
I DON'T read a lot but I became very interested in this book, because I watched Oprah and I was so impressed with Sen. Barack Obama. Reasons: he seemed smart, very eloquent and also very ambitious. I would hope a lot of people purchase his book because of his hope for all Americans, it does not matter what race or religion. This is so important because I think America is divided because of race and religion, the book changes your perspective of how you view life and people in it. On the other hand, it broadens your horizon to value family, friends, and this beautiful land of opportunity.
Book arrived within 3 days. It was well wrapped and in mint condition. Although this was the first book I purchased from Overstock, it won't be the last. I would highly recommend others to purchase books this way--a particularly good value as a Club O Member since I only had to pay $1 for my whole order that day!
In Barack Obama's new book, The Audacity of Hope, he outlines his feelings and his experiences getting to where he is today. Most people do not like politics, and this book, while it is of political stance, it is not party recruitment propaganda. I, personally, enjoy politics, but was still glad this was not just politics in black and white. This book is a MUST READ if you enjoy the political world, or if you think that all politicians are drones (this will prove otherwise). Barack Obama is a strong, upstanding man. There is no audacity of hope in this book. Just pure pleasure, and hope. Period. There is no audacity in this man's message.
I wanted to find out about a politician that makes you curious to find out about him. His honesty, values and political thought process can only help you think of JFK. Obama is not just an intelligent and honorable man but will be a great leader of this country and is a rising power to be reckoned with.
