In 1976, I watched all of these episodes nine times each, and held a cassette tape recorder to the TV to preserve at least the audio from this series. These discs were a long time coming, but I am so glad to have them at last. The "educational-sounding" narrator sounds a bit dated by current standards, admittedly. But the warmth and humanity of the portrayals of these great Americans really hold up, especially George Grizzard as John (still definitive), Kathryn Walker as Abigail, and William Daniels as John Quincy. When I visited the Adams National Historic Site in 2005, I felt as if the series had come to life around me--nearly 30 years after the fact. Certainly a testament to the power of the work.
