I am a second year nursing student and was concerned about pharmacology. My daughter ( a medical student) recommended this book. So far, it has been wonderful as a supplement to my textbook. Several of my fellow students have utilized other ridiculously simple books into their study guides and highly recommend them.

I was in a cinch when I originally special ordered this textbook for twice the price from my school bookstore. Next thing you know, it's already been 3 weeks and I get a call that it won't be coming for a whole month. I had my first exam in a week and I had a whole lot of homework to do. I had gotten my scholarship refund and I decided I'd rather not wait and go ahead and get a refund for the textbook at school. I found it on overstock for cheaper than most places and got 2-5 business day shipping for just 10 more dollars. It came in in 2 business days. And I had time to do my homework before my test. ;)

Most of the time, the thing that really helps you to learn something is a great teacher. When you have a teacher that is, for whatever reason, not able to impart the concepts to you in a way that makes sense you can get frustrated. I like this book because it's written by a funny, great teacher who can be a substitute for a less than dynamic teacher. The examples are good, the language is humorous and memorable. It breaks down concepts in a way that's easy to digest. It's not a replacement for a calculus textbook (it doesn't intend to be), but it is well constructed. The only thing it doesn't have are example problems for you to work out, like a textbook does.

I read the review in either TIME or NEWSWEEK mag, and it appeared quite good. BUT, I was sorely dissapointed. Its like one of those bad textbooks you had in college where you have to read it. But I didn't have to read it ---so I stopped. The style is NOT conducive to easy reading. Its as if the authors want to show how intellectual they are by deliberately making the material hard to read and follow. I read a lot of non-fiction books, and I'm usually quite happy with the one's I get. But this one really annoyed me, and if I could have returned it ---I would have definitely done so. Do NOT waste your money or time.

This book was (I believe) originally intended as a textbook for college professors looking for something more interesting than the average text. It requires supplemental information for that purpose, but is a fabulous source of information about how music affects brain chemistry and just why it is that the jingle from T.V. is stuck in our head for days (or years in my case, but that's another story). It requires no special knowledge of musical terms, although a basic understanding of music theory would help, and all of the brain terms are explained clearly and accurately. It's entertaining and accurate - a combination that doesn't come along every time you pick up a book on music and the brain! Great for educators, students, parents, musicians, and therapists. If you like this one, you might also try " The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog" , by Bruce Perry and Maia Szalavitz. There are some inspiring tales of music used as a recovery tool in that book, too. Happy reading!
