This DVD set collects all the episodes of the 1990s HBO cartoon "Spawn," as well as some bonus features and commentary. Honestly, just the episodes alone make this worth having. The "Spawn" cartoon (along with MTV's "The Maxx" and the Warner Bros' "Batman" and "The Tick") helped rebuild a market for superhero shows on TV after the 1980s crash. "Spawn" helps establish a far more serious tone than most other shows though, setting a dark and satirical plot about fundamentalist Christianity, militarist paranoia, and an ingrained fatalism about America's ability to address social and economic problems. Unlike most comic books, the show refuses to insult the intelligence of its audience, and assumes viewers will pick up on these subtle themes. For that, it should be saluted.
