This third album from the Talking Heads shows the band experimenting with a "collective" lineup, which goes beyond the four main members, and also toying with improvised lyrics. These elements would come to full fruition with "Remain in Light," but already show brilliant results on "Fear of Music." The latin rhythms, danceable basslines, and nervous herky-jerky guitar parts craft a fusion of funk and punk that is unlike anything else from the late '70s, and would go on to influence countless other bands. Talking Heads were perhaps the greatest American rock band to ever exist, and this album helps them make a strong case for it.
