Johnny Depp and Tim Burton join forces again in a big-screen adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's award-winning musical thriller "Sweeney Todd." Depp stars in the title role as a man unjustly sent to prison who vows revenge, not only for that cruel punishment, but for the devastating consequences of what happened to his wife and daughter. When he returns to reopen his barber shop, Sweeney Todd becomes the Demon Barber of Fleet Street who "shaved the heads of gentlemen who never thereafter were heard from again." Joining Depp is Helena Bonham Carter as Mrs. Lovett, Sweeney's amorous accomplice, who creates diabolical meat pies. The cast also includes Alan Rickman, who portrays the evil Judge Turpin, who sends Sweeney to prison and Timothy Spall as the Judge's wicked associate Beadle Bamford and Sacha Baron Cohen is a rival barber, the flamboyant Signor Adolfo Pirelli.

Revenge is a Dish Best Served Cold

msfitprod from Bay Area, CA, Sep 2, 2008

If anyone has a right to revenge, it is Sweeney Todd. Falsely accused and imprisoned, escaping to come home and find everything gone--daughter, wife. Only Mrs. Loveit to depend on and finally betrayed by her. This is a great story and well acted. The only disappointment being that Tim Burton chose to leave out the chorus numbers. It is one of our greatest musicals of all time. Johnny Depp never disappoints, Alan Rickman is ever versatile, and Helena Bonham Carter is sublime,

Johnny Depp's performance was astounding! But them you would expect nothing less from this prolific actor. He really made you feel his angst and heart ache. You couldn't help but feel sorrow for his charachter. I say , "Bravo" to yet another brilliant performance from this wonderful actor, he deserves it!

Not what you might expect

Entertaining~ The "blood and gore" elements are done in a "campish" fashion and are really not that frightening. I work at a middle school and have heard nothing negative from any student who has seen it. In fact, I took my 15 year old daughter to see it and she suffered no ill effects whatsoever.

Take with a pinch of salt.

nosferatu from New York, Apr 12, 2008

Blood and more blood are the main ingredients in this slightly farcical adaptation by Tim Burton. Not for children anyway, but adults may even find the amount of blood gratuitous. Of course Depp pulls off the singing in an English accent perfectly, proving once and for all that he can sing and dance and multi-task with panache. The dry wit and dreary expressions are part of the humor, I think. Depp looks like the bride of Frankenstein and Edward scissorhands on prozac ( that isnt working ). Bonham- Carter and the rest of the cast can belt out a good tune too. Alan Rickman was also typically good with the droll, evil character we are used to seeing in Harry Potter. All in all a good movie but not for everyones tastes. If you like Tim Burton, you will not be disappointed. Take with a pinch of salt and laugh a little, even if the plot is a little old.
