Still Alice is a compelling debut novel about a 50-year-old woman's sudden descent into early onset Alzheimer's disease, written by Lisa Genova, who holds a Ph. D in neuroscience from Harvard University. Alice Howland, happily married with three grown children and a house on the Cape, is a celebrated Harvard professor at the height of her career when she notices a forgetfulness creeping into her life. As confusion starts to cloud her thinking and her memory begins to fail her, she receives a devastating diagnosis: early onset Alzheimer's disease. Fiercely independent, Alice struggles to maintain her lifestyle and live in the moment, even as her sense of self is being stripped away. In turns heartbreaking, inspiring and terrifying, Still Alice captures in remarkable detail what's it's like to literally lose your mind... Reminiscent of A Beautiful Mind, Ordinary People and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, Still Alice packs a powerful emotional punch and marks the arrival of a strong new voice in fiction.0914875566\\In the early 20th century, herbs were commonly used in the home for treating conditions that did not require a doctors care. Joseph Meyer devoted his life to providing herbs and information to people all across the country, earning him the title of the Old Herb Doctor.
Many readers of Meyers Herbalist Almanac were inspired to send letters praising his herbs and treatments, claiming miraculous cures, and sharing their own remedies. Those letters were collected to create The Old Herb Doctor.
Herbal remedies have once again risen in popularity and widespread use. The Old Herb Doctor details the way Americans used medicinal herbs in the 1920s and 30s and is a must for those interested in herbal medicine and natural cures.
This book is well-written and easy to become absorbed by. I loved it so much that I was sad when it was over.
Still Alice - one amazing, informative and frightening book! If you have a loved one, friend or family member suffering with Alzheimer's Disease, this is a must read. Insightful into the mysteries of the disease. This is not a beach book - this is a think book and worth every penny and every bit of information it provides.
Having watched a dear friend go through the rages of Alzheimer's Disease, I found the book to be very gentile on the aspects of the disease. I expected more feeling, and more depth on the impact of her deterioration. The book was well written, good read; just missing impact.
Having studied Psychology for several years (obtained BA in Psychology) I eagerly jump at the chance to read a book about mental health and social issues (poverty, child abuse, mental health issues etc.)My choice in reading material may not be the norm but I find these types of books intriguing and fascinating. Further more I truly believe that what a psychology student learns in text book material and lectures can not compare to books such as this.Still Alice is a must read for any Psychology student, any person in a gerontology field and any one who has a history of mental disorders in their families. The only down fall for me was that I read the book in a day and a half and felt that I was in and out of the world of Alzheimers way too fast.
