Shot in Salzburg against the majestic Bavarian Alps, THE SOUND OF MUSIC is considered one of the greatest screen musicals ever made. Winner of five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director (Robert Wise), the film, based on a real family and their true events, tells the story of a young postulate, Maria (Julie Andrews), who, after proving too high-spirited for the Mother Abess and other nuns, is sent off to work as a governess to seven unruly children. The Von Trapp family is run, in military style, by the seemingly cold-hearted Captain Von Trapp (Christopher Plummer), a lonely widowed naval officer. Seeing how badly he and his children need companionship, he proposes to the Baroness Schraeder (Eleanor Parker), a calculating, mutual friend of beloved family friend Max Detweiler (Richard Haydn). It is the baroness who soon realizes that it's Maria--with her warmth and love for the children--the captain really loves. It is nearly bliss for the newly formed family who loves to sing together--except for the cloud looming over their beloved Austrian horizon: Hitler is ascending to power, forcing Von Trapp to decide whether to join the Nazi party--which he loathes--or force his family to leave their home forever. One of the most memorable scores ever written (by Rodgers and Hammerstein) and breathtaking performances by Andrews, Plummer, and the seven children mark this classic as one of the world's most favorite films.

  • Not what you're expecting

Wouldn't you assume that "The Sound of Music 40th Anniversary Edition" would include the actual MOVIE? Well, it doesn't. You get two DVDs filled with interviews with Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer and a video tour of Austria. Very, very disappointing. Now I have to spend additional $$$ for the movie!

  • DVD sound of Music

I was really happy to have a copy of my all time favorite movie the Sound of Music! It's nice not to have to get up and change the video at Intermission! the Special Features are really interesting-from the session with the grown up cast of the children, to Julie Andrew's segments and Christopher Plummer. I learned so many interesting details and truths (about Maria). Definitely a good addition to anyone's movie library.

  • My misty eyes

I was so happy to see this wonderful movie I haven't seen in years that it made my eyes get misty. I was even happier to be passing on this happy story and love of a good movie to my daughter. She is almost four and loves the movie. The extras are interesting and informative-lots of fun stuff the fans will adore.

  • Perfect!

My husband and I were flipping through the channels and saw this on TV and at about the same time stated we should purchase this movie for our own DVD collection. Glad we did, it's a classic!!

The Sound of Music is a jewel for all times. My parents watched it when they were little, I watched it as a little boy in the 80's and my nieces and nephews are watching it now as little chidren too. This masterpiece is sure to capture the hearts of your family and this 40 year edition is amazing with all the extra features. Great value and great film. I also received just in time for Christmas which was great. I am very pleased.
