While it surely wasn`t its intent, the classic 1958 field recording, SOUNDS OF NORTH AMERICAN FROGS, as narrated by noted hepetologist Charles M. Bogert on Folkways, has become a prime exhibit of Incredibly Strange Music exotica. Bogert, who sounds like a chipper William Burroughs, is an obviously authoriative guide to the dizzyingly varied chirps and calls of frog species, and this in North America alone! (Of course, this was long before the frog popuation declined alarmingly in the last decade of the 20th century.) Beyond that, the counterpoint between the folksy, middle-American strains of Bogert`s narration and nearly 100 excerpts of frog vocalizations makes for a kind of natural symphony that is bracing, soothing, and funny all at once.
