In nineteenth-century China, in a remote Hunan county, a girl named Lily, at the tender age of seven, is paired with a laotong, “old same,” in an emotional match that will last a lifetime. The laotong, Snow Flower, introduces herself by sending Lily a silk fan on which she’s painted a poem in nu shu, a unique language that Chinese women created in order to communicate in secret, away from the influence of men. As the years pass, Lily and Snow Flower send messages on fans, compose stories on handkerchiefs, reaching out of isolation to share their hopes, dreams, and accomplishments. Together, they endure the agony of foot-binding, and reflect upon their arranged marriages, shared loneliness, and the joys and tragedies of motherhood. The two find solace, developing a bond that keeps their spirits alive. But when a misunderstanding arises, their deep friendship suddenly threatens to tear apart.

Lisa See is the author of Flower Net (an Edgar Award nominee), The Interior, andDragon Bones, as well as the critically acclaimed memoir On Gold Mountain. The Organization of Chinese American Women named her the 2001 National Woman of the Year. She lives in Los Angeles.

  • 5 star story

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan is one of those books that is able to exceed great expectations. My sister let me borrow this book after telling me what a moving story it was and how much she loved it. I am easily disappointed whenever my expectations are influenced by a great deal of hype, but I read it with an open mind. I am happy to say that Snow Flower did not disappoint in the least bit. The story is about the friendship of Lily and Snow Flower, and their destinies at a time in a culture that predetermines life by birth. Though the bond shared by Lily and Snow Flower is special, like all relationships, it is imperfect. We read about the triumphs and challenges that the characters face as individuals and how their friendship transcends the events and changes that come about with life and time. The author illustrates the complexities and magnitude of emotions of a lifelong friendship and we see the importance of loyalty and forgiveness and the insignificance of bitterness and grudge. Snow Flower and the Secret Fan is a beautiful and emotional story that is both entertaining and memorable.

  • Great Book

This book was so good, I think it took me two days to read it. The characters were well formed, and there were times I think I almost physically felt their pain. It truely gives you a certain respect for the culture.

  • NOt a great read

It is informative - the way things were for girls getting their feet bound, but not an entertaining read. I've certainly read better authors' work
