Born in 1859, Sholom Rabinovitch, a Russian Jew, later became famous for his popular short stories--on which the hit musical FIDDLER ON THE ROOF was based--under the name Sholom Aleichem. This picture book biography focuses on the writer's childhood. Young Sholom greatly admired his father's wonderful ability to amuse people. He longed to share this talent, becoming a gifted imitator and joker, enraging his teachers while sending his classmates into spasms of laughter. He also wanted to help his family, and plotted to find the riches supposedly buried under a hill in his childhood hometown, Voronko. His many childhood experiences were the seed of his writing as an adult. With full-color art.
