A marked improvement over their debut, LEAVE A WHISPER, Shinedown`s sophomore effort, US AND THEM (2005), is a more focused take on the group`s hard-hitting post-grunge sound. The band`s primary influences--Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Creed--are relatively clear, yet there are also touches of nu-metal and emo expressivity. Given the familiar territory it covers, US AND THEM isn`t exactly a musical revelation, but lead singer Brent Smith wails admirably, the guitars are chunky and churning, and the overall package rocks.
